About the Business of Membership

That’s when I got hooked on planning membership recruitment and retention strategies and activities and watching my program grow as a result.

No one goes to school to become a membership professional. It’s a profession that finds us by happenstance. It found me back in 1996. The years prior to that, I had been working in sales and marketing and was helping some non-profit association clients grow their membership programs. I liked the concept of membership and landed a low-level full-time membership position as a student programs manager at a national association. That’s when I got hooked on planning membership recruitment and retention strategies and activities and watching my program grow as a result. I climbed the career ladder through manager and director level positions reaching executive level membership positions at individual membership organizations and later trade associations. Although there were opportunities for me to become an executive director or CEO of organizations, I knew my passion was membership and there was still more to discover and explore in that world. I’ve taken my experience and expertise and poured it into this site in an effort to help other membership professionals and membership-based organizations grow and thrive. I continue to work as a consultant to improve and optimize membership programs of all kinds. To learn more about me and my experience, please feel free to review my detailed bio and resume.
